Dougherty County GaArchives History - Letters .....Nelson Letters ************************************************ Copyright. They were apparently placed at the history center in 1971 by some of the Davis Family. The original letters and documents from Washington, LaFayette, Jefferson, Edmund Randolph and others were all there, as well as photocopies and early photostatic copies of other documents. Some intriguing materials in the collection included a photostatic copy of John Nelson, Jr.'s commission as a Captain in the cavalry of the Commonwealth of Virginia, signed by the governor - Thomsa Jefferson, in 1779; a full-size copy of Thomas Nelson, Jr.'s commission as a Captain of cavalry in the U.S. Army in 1812, signed by President James Madison , and his promotion to Major in 1814. There are articles regarding the Nelson family in Columbus (Thomas Nelson, Jr. moved there in 1838 and his son, Capt. Thomas Nelson organized "Nelson's Rangers, a cavalry troop in the Confederate Army. He was killed at the Battle of Tupelo, MS in 1864), references to the Nelson family silver - spirited out of the house in Yorktown before the seige of the city in 1781 and later taken to Columbus, and a ceremonial sword presented by Congress to Thomas Nelson, Jr. for his gallant service in the War of 1812.
