A. Woods of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved December 15th, 1894, hereby submits his proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? Wm. A. Woods Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia 2. Where did you reside January 1st, 1894, and how long have you been a resident of this state? Albany, Georgia for fifty three years 3. When and where were you born? August 2nd, 1831 Lancaster District, S.C. 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? 1st Ala. Regt., Capt. Gus(?). I was at Pensacola for 12 months, then joined 18th Ala. Regt., Capt. Shep Ruffin at Corinth, Miss. And transferred to Capt. Jno. T. Hurt’s Co., Schley Co. Guards, 5th Ga. Regt. 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Can’t give exact dates, but from some time in 1863 to the surrender at Greensboro, N.C. 6. For how long a period did you discharge military duty? During the whole war. 7. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? At Greensboro, N.C. at the general surrender. 8. What is your present occupation? No regular occupation. 9. How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? Very little. 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? No regular occupation, jobbing about. 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz: first “age and poverty,” second “infirmity and poverty” or third “blindness and poverty”? First and second. 12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such a condition that you could not earn your support? If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent? If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind and when and where you lost your sight? On the first count, it has been 5 or 6 years since I have scarcely able to do anything. On the second count, I was shot in the left knee at the Coosahatchee river near Roca Falego(?) in So. Ca. (SC). 13. What property, effects or income do you possess and its gross value? None 14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895, 1896 and what disposition, if any, did you make of same? None, except less than fifty dollars of household and kitchen furniture. 15. In what County did you reside during those years and what property did you return for taxation? In Dougherty County, Geo., about $50 household and kitchen furniture. 16. How were you supported during the years of 1896 and 1896? Almost entirely by my wife’s cousin, Mr. J.E. Hall. 17. How much did your support cost each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? About $100 for each year. Very little or none from my own efforts. 18. What was your employment during 1895 and 1896? What pay did you receive in each year? Jobbing about, but made very little. 19. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? Yes, ?? wife no children. Wife an invalid. We are extremely dependant on Mr. J.E. Hall. We have no homestead. 20. Questions for Witness STATE OF GEORGIA Schley County William Allen of said State and County, having bee presented as a witness in support of the application of W.A. Woods for pension under the Act approved December 15th, 1894, and after being duly sworn true answers to make the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? William Allen, Ellaville, Ga. Schley County. 2. Are you acquainted with W.A. Woods, the applicant, is of how long have you known him? Am acquainted with W.A. Woods, known him since 1860. 3. Where does he reside, and how long has he been a resident of this state? Resides in Albany, Ga. At this time, been resident of Ga. Since 1860. 4. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate Army or the Georgia militia? How do you know this? I know he served in the Confederate Army because I was in the same company and regiment he was. 5. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? He was transferred from 11th Ala. Regiment to the 5th Ga. Regiment. 6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was member of same company and regiment. 7. How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? From 1863 to close of war, he perform regular military duty, he made a good soldier. He was discharged at terminus(?) of war. 8. What property, effects or income has the applicant? (Give your means of knowledge) None. Applicant lives near to me and I am personally acquainted with circumstances. 9. What property, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1895 and 1896, and what disposition, if any did he make of same? Nothing in 1895. 10. What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition? None. Very bad, old age and rheumatism. 11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so why? Old age, infirmity & rheumatism. 12. How was he supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By Mr. Hall, a cousin to (unreadable) wife. 13. What portion of his support for the these two years was derived from his own labor or income? None. 14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant’s physical condition that entitles him to pension under the Act of December 15th, 1894? Applicant is 67 years old, very feeble and extremely (unreadable). 15. What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by the applicant? None whatever (additional unreadable) Note: In the margin is written the following: “Mr. A.J. S____ of Albany, Do. Co., Ga. Answers questions 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. AFFIDAVIT OF PHYSICIANS STATE OF GEORGIA, Dougherty County. Personally came before me P.L. Hilsman & W.L. Davis, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county, who being severally sworn say on oath that they have examined carefully W.A. Woodin (should be Woods), applicant for pension under the Act of 1894, and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows: Weak from age and rheumatism in left leg which is attributable to old wound made by mini ball below knee. We further say on oath that the physical condition of applicant renders him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself, and that we no interest in said pension being allowed. I further certify that before answering the foregoing questions, the witness took the oath prescribed by law and that the full text of the affidavits was read to the witness before same was signed by him. WIDOW’S AFFIDAVIT State of Georgia County of Dougherty Personally came Mrs. Ella Woods who says on oath she is the widow of W.A. Woods, to whom, in the County of Mitchell, State of Georgia, she was married on the 3rd day of August, 1874, that she remained his wife up to the 3rd day of May, 1907, at which time he died, and that she has not since married. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Dougherty County, in said Sate of Georgia, and was on the indigent pension roll of the State of Georgia, having been allowed a pension of $60.00 per annum on account of being a soldier in Company G, 5th Ga. Regiment, Ga. Volunteers or State Guards. What affliction have you and how does it effect you? Rheumatism What have you been doing to earn a support since 1st of January 1900? Nothing What property or effects had you on 1st January, 1900? None What have you acquired since, and what income have you now? None What disposition have you made of any property since 1st January, 1900, and at what price and for what purpose? None Deponent further says that she is now a resident of Dougherty County, and has continuously resided in the State of Georgia since the 1st day of March, 1857. She applies for the pension provided by the Act of the General Assembly, approved December 18, 1901. Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 5th day of July, 1907. David W. Smith Ordinary of Dougherty County AFFIDAVIT FOR THREE WITNESSES State of Georgia County of Dougherty Personally came B.F. Brinberry (?) and W.A. Woodin, known to me to be reputable and truthful persons, who says on oath that from his own personal knowledge, Mrs. Ella Woods, who made the foregoing affidavit, is the widow of W.A. Woods, who died in Dougherty County and State of Georgia on the 3rd day of May, 1907, and that she has not since married; That she became his wife on the 3rd day of August 1894, and so remained up to the time of his death, and that she has resided in this State continuously since the 1st day of March 1857. What affliction does she suffer? Rheumatism What property or income had she on 1st January, 1900? None What has she in her possession and control now? Nothing How was she supported in 1900 and 1901? Smith, Ordinary, Dougherty County. PHYSICIAN’S AFFIDAVIT State of Georgia Dougherty County Personally came before me P.L. Hilsman and A.H. Hilsman, both of whom are known to me to be reputable physicians, who say on oath that they personally know Mrs. W.A. Woods mentioned in the foregoing affidavit, that she is personally afflicted with chronic muscular rheumatism was has so contracted the muscles as to prevent & disqualify her from doing any work which aid in her support.
