His funeral service will be WEDNESDAY, 11 AM at Walden Chapel of the First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. The Revs. Michael McAfee, Scott Hagan, and Donald Kea will officiate. Dr. Berg practiced ophthalmology in Albany from 1948 to 1998. Born July 23, 1915 in Macon, GA, he was the oldest son of the late Leonard and Willie Lee Darby Berg of Macon, GA. He was a graduate of Lanier High School and Mercer University. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and interned there at University Hospital. Dr. Berg was a flight surgeon in World War II for the 401st fighter-bomber squadron, in the US Army Air Corps. He served in the entire campaign on the western front in Europe including the Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Ardenne (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe. He achieved the rank of captain and received six battle stars plus the Presidential distinguished unit citation. Following the war, he was a resident at Barnes-McMillan Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and a resident physician in ophthalmology at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, AL. Dr. Berg was a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology; a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology; and a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia, the Dougherty County Medical Society, and the Southern Medical Association. For many years, he was on the staff of Phoebe Putney and Palmyra Hospitals. He was a former president of the Albany Lions Club; a member of First United Methodist Church, a past chairman of its administrative board, and a member of the Hudson Malone Sunday school class; and a past member of the Walter H. Burt American Legion Post 30. Dr. Berg is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Chandler Berg, formerly of Augusta; three children: Elizabeth Barry and her husband Don, Albany; Susan Frenzel and her husband Jim, Atlanta; Dr. Chandler Berg and his wife Karen, Albany; a brother: James Berg, Macon, four grandchildren: Chuck Frenzel, Atlanta, Lindsay, Lara, and Patrick Berg, all of Albany.
