His funeral service will be WEDNESDAY (Today) 2 PM at Kimbrell-Stern with interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Finbar Stanton will officiate. A native of Hazlehurst, MS, he had lived in Albany since 1954. He was educated at Memphis, TN city schools, and graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University in New York City. Mr. Burgess served in the infantry of the US Army with the rank of Major during WWII, serving 5 years overseas in the China-Burma- India theatre. He was an advertising agent. Mr. Burgess was a member of the Albany Board of Realtors and a former member of the Board of Directors of Doublegate Country Club. He was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church where he served on the Parrish Council and on numerous committees. Mr. Burgess had formerly served on the Boards of Radium Springs Country Club, the Heart Fund where he served as Chairman in 1965, the Dougherty County United Way where he served several terms, and was its President in 1980. Survivors include his wife: Barbara Conrad Burgess, Albany; 2 daughters: Pam Middleton and her husband Frank, Albany, Helene Fleming and her husband (Carlton), Tifton; 2 sons: John Banks Burgess and his wife Missy, Atlanta, William E. Burgess, Jr. and his wife Leigh Ann, Pittsburgh, PA; 3 step children: Deborah Carden Henry and her husband Ken, Marietta, Lisa Carden Skates and her husband David, Grayson, GA, Cathy Carden Muggridge, Lilburn, GA; 12 grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.
