Duncan BUENA VISTA — Clarke W. (Sonny) Duncan died Wednesday, January 29, 2003. Sonny was born March 14, 1914, in Buena Vista, Marion County, GA. He lived in the same house for eighty five years and was a life long member of Buena Vista United Methodist Church. He attended local schools and the University of Georgia. In October 1934, he became a clerk at the Buena Vista Loan and Savings Bank. Mr. Duncan became President of the bank in 1942, one of the youngest bank presidents in the state at that time. In 1979, he became chairman of the Board of Directors. He retired in 1983. Sonny was a leader in his community serving as Chairman of the Marion County Board of Education for 12 years, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Buena Vista United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. His achievements at the state level were no less impressive; President of the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, appointed as a member of the State Board of Education for 10 years and then as a member of the State Highway Board for 12 years. Sonny was a devoted alumnus of the University of Georgia and held several positions; President of the Alumni Society for two years, a charter member of the President's Club and a trustee of the University of Georgia Foundation. He held memberships in Sphinx, the Gridiron Secret Society, and the Heritage Society. Other activities included: Chairman and Executive Committee member of the Magnolia Manor, the South Georgia Home for Aging Inc., Americus for over 30 years, Director of CNL Financial Corporation and Cherokee Life Insurance Company, Macon; and a member of the Big Eddy Club, Columbus. Sonny Duncan was everybody's friend because he loved people and he received great satisfaction in helping others to help themselves. Many are much better individuals from having been touched by him. One of his greatest characteristics was an unfailing sense of humor. Seldom did he pass up an opportunity to tell a friend one of his latest stories. Clarke W. "Sonny" Duncan married Sue Benson of Mobile, Alabama. The two of them were lockstep as leaders in local and state affairs all their lives. They reared two daughters, Kathy Duncan and Susan Duncan Plunkett, both of Atlanta. Sonny, 88, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2003, after an extended illness. Survivors include his wife; two daughters; two grandchildren; one sister, Bess Crittenden of Albany. A memorial service for Mr. Duncan will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Buena Vista United Methodist Church and at 2 p.m. Monday at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta. The family will be receiving friends at the church immediately following the services.
