The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Payne Chapel AME Church in Cuthbert. The Rev. Thomas D. Ferguson, pastor will officiate. Mrs. Garrett was born on November 1, 1915, in Cuthbert to the late Dave and Estelle Brannon. She was the wife of the late Henry C. Garrett, the grandmother of the late Veronica Renee Thompson and sister of the late Doris R. Pullins. In her early childhood, she joined Payne Chapel AME Church where she served faithfully in all aspects of church life. As a devoted member she sang in the choir, served on the Pastor's Aide Board, class leader of #1, and was a steward. Mrs. Garrett completed elementary and high school at Randolph County Schools. She received her BS degree in home economics from Savannah State College in Savannah. She also did graduate work at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, and Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Florida. Her professional career included teaching home economics two years at Sasser Junior High, in Sasser, and five years at Carver High School in Douglas. The remainder of her dedicated teaching career was a 29 year period at Randolph County High School, Cuthbert. She received numerous recognitions and awards for outstanding service to Vocational Home Economics Education. The community was an important part of her active life. She served on many committees and boards within the community of Cuthbert. She was a founding member of the Civican Club and the Randolph/Clay Retired Educators Association. She held every office in both of these organizations. She served as member of the Randolph County Library Committee for the development of the new library. She also served as the immediate past Historian of the Retired Educators Association for Randolph County. She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted and loving daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Earl Thompson; grandson, Earl M. Thompson Jr.; two great- grandchildren, Marissa and Maurice Thompson, all of Dayton, Ohio. A loving sister-in-law, Deloris Chapman and nephew, William (Buster) Adams of Columbus, Ohio. Two loyal and devoted cousins, Lucia Harris of Miami, Fla., Jeanette Davis of Brooklyn, N.Y., a host of other relatives and dear friends. Mother Dear is not saying good bye, but is preparing a welcome for each of us to the kingdom of God.
