Rose Oliver was born in North Carolina in June, 1814, and died in Albany, August 16th, making her age over 97 years. She belonged to James Miller from birth and became the property of James Shine Miller, who brought her to Twiggs County, Ga. from North Carolina in 1832, and to Dougherty County in 1852. She was the "Black Mammy" of all the Miller children, and after her emancipation she remained loyal to the family and loved those children as her own, and none the less was their love for her. They always affectionately called her "Mammy Rose". Last week shen she realized that death was approaching she sent for each of the Miller children, as she did for those of her own blood relationship, that she might bid each "good bye" and leave a parting word of comfort and exhortation. "Mammy Rose" joined the Methodist Church in slavery time with the family to which she belonged. She professed as strong a faith in God and manifested as bright a hope for Heaven as anyone with whom the writer has ever spoken. Such negroes have been a great blessing to the country. It is with sadness that we note the passing of these reliable and trustworthy ante-bellum landmarks. signed, S. C. Olliff Baconton, Ga. Additional Comments: This obituary made me very sad. I would love to be in contact with any of "Mammy Rose's" descendants. I believe that she originally was the slave of Elizabeth Oliver who was the first wife of James Shine Miller. James and Elizabeth moved to Twiggs County, Georgia in 1832. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
