USMC (Ret.), 76, of Albany, who died Wednesday October 17, 2007, at his residence, will be conducted Saturday 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery with full military honors. Rev. Bobby Moye and Chaplain Bobby Eason will officiate. A native of Beulah, North Dakota, Master Gunnery Sergeant Helvik was a graduate of Beulah High School where he was an all-round athlete. He had scholarship offers from seventeen colleges but chose to enlist in the Marine Corps on October 30, 1951. He saw action in Vietnam from 1964 to 1965 with the 12th Marines, 1st Marine Division in counter mortar radar deployment. While in service, he attended schools and also took a course in industrial radiography at Louisiana State University; after retiring in 1973, in Barstow, CA after twenty two years. In 1953, he was a guard at the American Embassy in Paris. When he returned to the States, he started his career in electronics. Through the years, he was stationed at multiple bases in California, Okinawa, Viet Nam and Georgia and was an instructor, supervisor and department head in basic electronics, ground radar, radar technology and calibration instrument repair. At the time of his retirement, he was Assistant Chief of Calibration Laboratory in Barstow, CA. His dress blues uniform is on display in the Beulah Museum. He was of the Catholic faith. When he returned to Albany (his wife’s hometown), he was employed at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. until the plant’s closing in 1986. He was active in the Southwest Georgia Sportsman Club and served on its board. His hobby was growing and testing roses for Jackson/Perkins. He and his wife grew hybrid tea roses and had seventy bushes in the yard. They also grew camellias. His wife, Tonia has sung professionally all of her life with many name bands all over the USA. She is very active in Sweet Adelines as a member, choir director and songwriter. She also sings with the Albany Chorale group. Survivors include his wife, Tonia Holland Helvik of Albany, GA; his son, Hank Tallman of Lee Co., GA; and a sister, Jeanette Isaak of Hugo, CO. The family will receive friends Friday, October 19, 2007, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.
