A native of Fayette, AL, Mr. Jenkins was one of nine children born to farmer, John Henry Jenkins and wife, Ollie Cockrell Jenkins and he had resided in Rena Lara since 1937, where she he farmed in the Delta of Mississippi, and was a pioneer in the pecan industry. Mr. Jenkins was past president of the Mississippi Pecan Growers Association and was director and past president of the Southeastern Pecan Growers Association and in this capacity he spent time in Albany, GA. (The Pecan City of the World) when Albany hosted the Peacan Festival, during the seventies and eighty's. He had many business friends in the Albany area. He was honored in the Louisiana Pecan Growers Hall of Fame. He received honorary doctorate degrees from several southern universities for pecan research. He was honored and he was chosen as outstanding industry growers in the Alabama Pecan Growers Association and cultivated the Jenkins Pecan Variety to be released jointly by Auburn and Mississippi State Universities. At the time of his death, he was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale, MS, where he attended Fellowship Bible Class. In addition to his wife, Edith (Pete) Jenkins, survivors include a son, Kenneth Jenkins and his wife, Mary of Clarksdale; two sisters, Hazel Hogue of Cleveland, MS, and Martha Dacus of Metairie, LA; four brothers, Hershel Jenkins and his wife, Margaret of Oxford, MS, Gaynus Jenkins and his wife Bonnie of Fayette, AL, Charles L. Jenkins and his wife, Laurie of Albany, GA, Dennis Jenkins and his wife, Eloise of Alligator, MS; a sister-in-law, Opal Jenkins of Helena, ARK; three grandchildren, Lamar Jenkins and Perry Jenkins, both of Alligator and Travis Jenkins of Peachtree City, GA; and five great- grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for Mission through Oakhurst Baptist Church.
