Laslie BAINBRIDGE — W.T. "Squint" Laslie, 80, of Attapulgus died Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Attapulgus United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Scott Cook will officiate. The active pallbearers will be Kevin Manley, David Holt, Robert Tate, Willie Jesse, Charles Laslie and Preston Laslie. The honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Hatcher, Louie Barineau, J.C. Roberts, Ken Markham, Malachi Gordon, Pete Miller, Jack Wingate, Jack Dodd, Jesse Spooner, Dan Miller, Joe Sharber, Palmer Rich, Baxter Swing, Dr. Michael Laslie, Berry Laslie and Mayo Livingston. A native of Decatur County, Mr. Laslie was born March 28, 1922. He attended Oglethorpe University, Atlanta, and Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. He was a member of Alpha Lambda Tau social fraternity. He served during WW II with the 410th Army Air Force. He returned to Decatur County and engaged in the growing of shade-grown tobacco, becoming associated with the King Edward Tobacco Company and retired as vice president in Quincy, Fla. He served as chairman of the Tobacco Foundation, chairman of the board of directors of First Federal Savings & Loan in Quincy, Fla., served on the board at Pioneer Savings Bank, Clearwater, Fla., and helped organize the First Port City Bank in Bainbridge, serving as board of directors. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Attapulgus Methodist Church, where he formerly served as treasurer, board of stewards and board of trustees. He was an organizational board member of the Bainbridge Memorial Hospital, having served for 30 years until November 1988 at which time he became a member of the newly created hospital foundation. He was a farmer, avid fisherman and hunter. Survivors include his son, Winton Charles "Chuck" Laslie (wife June) of Quincy, Fla.; daughter, Anne Laslie Bevis (husband Stuart) of Tallahassee, Fla.; sister, Mary Virginia McCall of Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren, Preston and Charles Laslie and Paul and Rob Bevis; faithful friends, Betty Jean Barkley and Willie Jesse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Roberts Laslie and parents, James Preston and Maude Abell Laslie. Memorials may be made to Attapulgus United Methodist Church.
