Everson Sam Pate ALBANY — Mr. Sam Pate, 91, of Putney passed away Monday, December 24, 2007 at his residence following an illness. His funeral service will be 11 AM Thursday, December 27, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Putney, with the Rev. Joe Carr and the Rev. Chip Gresham officiating. His interment will follow in Floral Memory Gardens. Sam S. Pate Sr. was born December 7, 1916 in Sylvester to the late Samuel Cleveland Pate and Ida Belle Shepard Pate. At the age of 7 he moved to Putney and resided here for 84 years. He was a 30 year retiree from Railway Express Agency (REA), and was the owner and operator of the “White Rock Country Store”, known as “Pates Service Station” in Putney for several years. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Putney and a member of the Calvin Key Sunday School Class. He was considered as one of Georgia’s most experienced pigeon keepers. He raised and raced Homing Pigeons from an early age. With the assistance of his family (now Giggey Lofts), many have experienced the white homers take flight, collect their bearings, then vanish in the blue and race back to their home lofts following bridal and funeral ceremonies. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII serving his country proudly as a radio operator on a carrier ship on the Island of Siapan. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Harriett Swartz Pate, his son, Harry “Punky” Pate and a brother, Bruce Pate. He is survived by his wife, Mary Matheson Swain Pate of Putney; his son, Sam S. “Sammy” Pate Jr. of Mitchell County; his daughters, Phyllis Pate Hodges and husband, Wendell and Linda Pate Giggey and her husband, Pat, all of Putney; eight grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren; plus several nieces, nephews and a host of close friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army., 308 W. 2nd Ave., Albany, GA 31701, or to First Baptist Church- Putney, 1125 Antioch Rd., Albany, GA 31705.
