The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. at Mathews Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Edison. A native of Randolph County, Gene grew up in Edison, the son of Ann Crozier Pierce and the late Walter Eugene Pierce, Jr., and graduated from Edison High School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Albany. Gene proudly volunteered to serve his country in 1968 by enlisting in the US Army and served one tour of duty in Vietnam participating in the TET Offensive. When his enlistment was up, he returned to the States and enrolled in The University of Georgia, where he graduated with a degree in journalism. After a brief employment with the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Gene followed his father and grandfather into the timber industry. Gene was a well respected and much loved member of the Albany and Southwest Georgia community. Gene’s expertise in forestry carried him to many parts of the world. In 1977 he lived in Brazil and logged the Rain Forest in the Amazon in what would become one of the most notable land clearing attempts in history. His vast knowledge of the timber business was utilized as an independent contractor by many plantation owners and managers for over 35 years. He worked closely as an advisor for Mead Coated Paper, Great Southern Paper Company, Georgia Pacific and many other large paper industry corporations. Gene enjoyed a lifelong friendship and business relationship with Mr. Sam M. Davis, Davis Lumber Company and Johhny Kavanaugh with K & A Logging. He was employed with Elberta Crate and Box Company in Bainbridge, Georgia for 16 years and most recently had established W.E. Pierce Company and worked in association with Tolleson Lumber Company in Perry, Georgia. A fun-loving, kind and generous southern gentleman, Gene Pierce was the kind of man legends are made of. He lived life to the fullest every day of his life and was a friend to all and foe to none. Survivors include his wife, Kay Heard Pierce, three sons, Walter Eugene Pierce IV and his wife, Carrie, of Edison, GA, Chadwick Tennille Pierce and his wife, Brandi, of Leesburg, GA, and Brian Kerry Dean and his wife, Sheree, of Bainbridge, GA, a beloved daughter, Beth Dean Haberman and her husband, Chris, of Dallas, TX, his mother, Ann Crozier Pierce of Edison, a brother, Robert Pierce of Edison, GA; mother-in-law, Mable Freeman Byrd of Dawson, GA and four cherished grandchildren, Sealy Pierce, Austin Davis, Seth Pierce and Haley Dean.
