He was born July 9, 1942 in Albany, moving to Statesboro in 1983. He was an accomplished athlete even at a young age, having been named the 1955 YMCA "Boy of the Year" at the age of 13. He later starred as an end and punter on the 1959 Albany High School Indians AAA Georgia High School State football championship team, also being selected the same year as a member of the All State Team. Upon graduation in 1960, Mr. Poppell was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Presbyterian College. After college, Mr. Poppell returned to Albany to begin a successful career in the textile industry, from which he retired in 1999. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Albany. He will be remembered a a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who had a voracious love of sports and competition. He loved to cook and spend time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Odelle Gordon Poppell and his father, James Bennett Poppell Jr. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Sandra Poppell of Statesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Shane Spallino of Crowley, LA, and Janet and Ben Whitley of Savannah; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark and Melissa Poppell of Nashville, TN, and Mike Poppell of Statesboro; his stepmother, Louis Poppell of Americus; his brother and family, Jim, Julia and Charles Poppell of Richmond, VA, and seven granddaughters, Heather, Samantha, Shannon, and Sydney Spallino, Virginina Whitley, and Peyton and Isabella Poppell. Funeral services for Mr. Poppell will be held today (Sunday) at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Hodges-Turner-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Shane Spallino, Ben Whitley, Mike Patton, Travis Richardson, Bob Baldree, and Harold Herring. Visitation will be held today (Sunday) from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. at the funeral home.
