Lumpkin Rivers SYLVESTER — Florence J. Lumpkin Rivers of W. Franklin Street, Sylvester, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany, GA. The funeral will be at 12 noon Saturday at First African Baptist Church, Sylvester with interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, Sylvester. The Rev. Robert Rice Jr. will be officiating. Born November 24, 1933, in Worth County, Mrs. Rivers was educated in the Worth County Public School System at that time. She graduated from Oak Hill High School, Sylvester. She was a 1956 graduate of Morris Brown College. Mrs. Rivers was a retired educator. She was a member of Jones Chapel AME Church in Sylvester, where she served as church musician for many years. She worked diligently in the community, where she organized the first federally-funded Summer Food Program in Worth County, along with the first Summer Recreation Program in Worth County as well. She was affiliated with many organizations such as the National Association of Colored Women-La Primedes; Cherokee Rose Garden Club (Served as former vice president), NAACP, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Gamma Zeta Chapter, Morris Brown College, Atlanta, GA 53 years). Also served as the president of the Women's Missionary Society of the AME Church-the Sarah Allen Women's Missionary Society of Jones Chapel AME Church, Sylvester of the Albany-Valdosta District of the South Georgia Conference, where she was honored as Motivator of the Year. Survivors include her husband, James Rivers of Wando, SC; three daughters, Chiquita E. Rivers, Calorence E. Rivers, both of Sylvester, and Connie Rivers Mitchell of Daytona Beach, FL; sister-in-law, Ruth Lumpkin of Sylvester; niece, Rosa L. Roberts of Marietta; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Rivers of Wando, SC; six grandchildren.
