Nathaniel James Smith was born September 16, 1912 in Hallsboro, NC, to the late Manly and Ida Mae Smith. He accepted Christ at an early age at the Mount Hebron A.M.E. Zion Church. The Rev. Smith's life was distinguished and exceptional. He received a Bachelor of Divinity in 1965 from ITC/Phillips School of Theology. He received his Masters of Divinity in 1973 also from ITC. He pastored the CME Church for over 50 years. He served as Presiding Elder over several districts, including the Cordele District, The West Georgia Conference, The LaGrange District, West Georgia Conference, and Pastor of several other churches, including St. James C.M.E. Church, Dawson, St. Mathews C.M.E. Church, Dawson, and St. Paul C.M.E. Church, Cusseta. He attended Tuskegee Institute where he received a BA degree in Vocational Agriculture. He was a High School Teacher and Principal in several counties until retirement. The Rev. Smith died Tuesday, December 17, 2002, at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Columbus. He is survived by one son, Nathaniel Moore Johnson (Carolyn), Atlanta; two grandsons, Joseph Craig Smith and Nathaniel K. Smith, both of Dawson; four great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ida Smith of Sanford, FL; several nieces and nephews, Aloysius Smith, Avery Alton Smith and Pazaria Mobley, of Sanford, FL, Austin, Vernon, Jewel and Lavern Brown, all of Baltimore, MC, Ida Brown of Augusta, and Alethia Mae Brown-Young of Newark, DE; and a devoted and caring friend, the Rev. Andrew L. Thomas Jr. (Minnie) of Columbus. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 24, 2002, 10 a.m. at St. Paul C.M.E. Church, Cusseta, with the Rev. Paul Milton, James N. Morton, and Elder John Avery officiating.
