S. Stephens, a merchant of this place, was drowned. Upon inquiring I learned that early this morning (Sunday) he went in company with his uncle "Griff" Stephens, carrying a fish basket with them, to the creek about two miles above the city, where the bridge crosses the creek, and that there he left his uncle and took a bateau to go down the creek a little ways and put it in promising his uncle to meet him at the river landing below the bridge that spans the river between Albany and East Albany. Soon after, or about the time his uncle got back to town, a boat was seen coming floating down the river with a fish basket in it, but Stephens was missing, and soon after a hat was discovered floating down the stream and was recognized as the missing man's hat. A large number of our citizens have spent the day in a fruitless attempt to find the body of the drowned man. G. A. T.
