My understanding is that this was a private school set up by the cotton mill in Albany for the children of its employees. I do not know the exact year that it was started but in 1944 or 1945, my grandmother, Anna Whatley Bland, came to Albany to teach at it. I can remember visiting her at the school in the early 1950s. It was a white wooden building situated on a corner on 11th Ave. near the cotton mill. To me it looked more like a church. It had two huge rooms and there were several grades in each room. The other teacher or maybe it was the principal was named Ruth Whaley. The mill had spared no expense when it came to playground equipment. There were huge swings, an extremely large slide, giant strides, etc. on the playground. The school apparently closed about 1954 and my grandmother went to teach at Mamie Brosnan School and later at Magnolia Elementary from which she retired about 1970. This picture of my grandmother and her class on the front steps of the school was taken @ 1950. Hope someone has other information or memories to share about this school.
