He married Francis J. Collins in Calhoun County,GA. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army on July 15, 1864 in Andersonville, GA in Company E 3rd Georgia Reserves. He was taken prisoner in Albany, GA after leaving Augusta heading towards Columbus Ga with his regiment to surrender. He later became a well known minister of the gospel having served as pastor of many churches in Early, and Clay County GA. He was pastor at New Hope both times when the new church buildings were erected the last which is still standing today. He joined the Bethel Baptist Association in 1897. He and Frances had the following children: William Ellis Dykes b. 1871 Emma Dykes b. 1875 George L. Dykes b. 1876 Agnis Dykes b. 1879 Elmer Dykes Bertha Dykes Jude Dykes Harry Dykes James Ellis filed for his pension in Early County in 1908. Affidavit from physician stated that he was suffering from old injuries, losing his eyesight and suffering from results of a severe attack of typhoid fever four years earlier. He died on August 24, 1927 from exaustion and is buried beside Francis in the George Cemetery which is located close to New Hope Church.
