STANDIFER, physician and surgeon, Blakely, Early Co., Ga., was born in Jasper county, Ga., June 12, 1816. After receiving a country school education, he studied medicine under Dr. Ridley, at La Grange, Ga. He then attended the lectures at Charleston (S. C.) Medical college, graduating in 1838. He located in Blakely, Ga., in 1840, where he has spent his professional life. He afterward attended lectures at the medical college of Georgia, at Augusta, where, he graduated in 1844. In 1870 he was stricken with paralysis, from which he recovered sufficiently to resume his practice. In 1882 he experienced a second attack, and decided to retire. He still, however, enjoys fine health and a clear and active mind. Dr. Standifer was married in 1846 to Miss Mary Grist Bryan, of Early county, by whom he has had three children: Florence, born in. 1848, widow of Ashley A. Hightower; Frances, born in 1850, wife of Maj. Thomas F. Jones, and William Bryan, born Nov. 22, 1855. Dr. Standifer attained to and has sustained an excellent reputation in his profession, and established a large practice. He is a master Mason and a member of Magnolia lodge No. 86. Second Biography: DR. WILLIAM METELLUS STANDIFER, the fourth child of Archibald Standifer and Elizabeth Jones Standifer, was born in Hillsboro, Jasper County, Georgia, on May 16, 1818. He came to Blakely in 1837 as a young man who was "reading" medicine under the Doctors Ridley of LaGrange, Georgia. He later attended the Medical College of Georgia and was graduated in 185 1. On January 12, 1848, William Metellus Standifer was married to Mary Grist Bryan, daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Evans Bryan. They were the parents of three children: Mrs. Florence (Florrie) Standifer Hightower, Mrs. Frances (Fanny) Standifer Jones, and Dr. William Bryan Standifer. Dr. Standifer was a charter member of Magnolia Lodge #86 F&AM of Blakely, serving as the first treasurer of Magnolia Lodge. Previously, he had joined Darley Lodge #17, F&AM of Fort Gaines, and in 1848 demitted to Magnolia Lodge. Dr. Standifer's home and office were on the east side of the public square in Blakely. Dr. William Metellus Standifer died September 10, 1898, and was buried in the Blakely Cemetery.
