FLEMING Born in Blakely, Georgia on February 18, 1865 was William W. Fleming. Married in 1886 to Miss Pearl Dews, of Baker County. Six children survive this union, these being Mrs. O. J. English, Atlanta, Georgia; Mrs. J. M. Haisten, Panama City, Florida; Mrs. W. D. Fleming, Birmingham, Alabama; Mrs. A. T. Fleming, Blakely, Georgia; Mrs. E. W. Fleming, Atlanta, Georgia and Mr. W. H. Fleming, Blakely, Georgia. He married the second time in 1926 Mrs. Ramelle Bradwell Strong. No children were born to this union. Brother Fleming was Clerk of the Blakely Baptist Church for twenty two years, being a member of the church for twenty four years, and served for twenty years as Deacon. He was for twenty one years Clerk of the Bethel Association, a service probably without parallel in the history of any Georgia Association. He was Clerk of the City of Blakely for a number of years and after an interim of two years, was re-elected to this post in 1930, but declined on account of ill health. He passed away at his home in Blakely June 10, 1930, in his sixty sixth year. His entire life was spent in the newspaper "game", learning the art under his father. He had at various times worked on papers in Arlington, Americus, Cuthbert and Blakely, and for the last twenty five years of his life was editor of the Early County News, Blakely, Georgia, which is one of the oldest and best papers of the State. He gave greatly of his time to all civic work, and was untiring in his efforts for anything that pertained to the welfare of his town, county and church. The Moderator of the Bethel Association said of him at the time of his death among other things the following: "For many years I have known Brother Fleming, and for twenty one years I sat by his side as he recorded the Minutes of this Association as your clerk. He was a man who believed in the right and once having made up his mind on matters concerning his church and community stood firmly by his convictions, even though he might be on the side of the minority. He had no thought of espousing a course because of its popularity but always, he stood for those things that he believed to be morally right and religiously correct. For twenty one years he has been the able and efficient clerk of this Association, having been elected for the first time as Clerk at Morgan, Georgia in 1909, and at which session your humble moderator was first elected. And since that date has succeeded himself each year for these twenty one years. He has responded to every request of this Association and its Moderator and correctly and faithfully discharged his every duty as such official. His life has been clean and above reproach, and his devotion to his Church and God faithful and true. No one will miss him more in this Association than I, as he has been my faithful friend and stood by the causes fostered by this Association and in every way carried out to the best of his ability the duties involved upon him. In his going we have lost an able ally in our work, a true friend at all times, his church, a faithful member and God's cause a beloved servant, and his family a beloved husband and father, yet he has been called to his reward, and we are reminded again that in the midst of life we should be prepared for the summons that must come to all and that we too may be called upon to answer at any time." ********************************************************************************************** following notes added by Debra Crosby 1920 Early County Georgia Census Blakely page 148 ED 69 sheet 17 354/372 William Flemming head 53 m GA PN GA Editor County Paper Pearl H. wife 50 f GA GA GA Earlie son 22 m Ga Ga Ga Hoyle son 16 m Ga Ga GA Jefferson brother 57 m Ga Ga Ga 1860 Census Index: FLEMING, WILLIAM W.
