J. Northen: Under a write of habeas corpus I ordered a prisoner admitted to bail. The sheriff refuses to produce the part and resists arrest. What must I do? W. H. Alexander, Ordinary The sheriff is L. E. Black. This telegram was sent in reply: W. H. Alexander, Blakley, Ga.: Proceed against sheriff for contempt. Place process in hands of coroner, who can summons posse and exercise whole power of county. If resistance is greater than posse can overcome, notify me. W. J. Northen On the face of it, this is a very serious state of affairs. In case the prisoner is held for a capital felony the ordinary has no right to issue the write -- but in any even the sheriff's resisting arrest probably means trouble.
