A Child Burned To Death

Guyton, Ga., November 30 – Mamie, the five-year-old daughter of L. Swinson, 
was fatally burned this morning and died at 3 o’clock.

That was a terrible accident by which Mamie Swinson, the five year old 
daughter of Henry Swinson of Guyton lost her life on Sunday last.  The child’s 
mother had left her alone in a room in which a fire was burning in an open 
stove.  While playing around the stove the little girl’s dress caught fire, 
and before anyone could go to her assistance the clothing had been burned from 
her body.  Mr. William Davant who was nearby was quick to render the little 
sufferer help, but it was seen that she could not live.  The child’s father, 
who is a local preacher, was not at home, and the burden of attention fell on 
friends. T.M. Arden of the Central railroad, secured Dr. J.G. Lawrence and 
with the aid of William Rivers and others soon had the patient’s burns 
dressed.  The skin from the child’s head to her heels had peeled off and while 
the doctor and those around were doing all that could be done, her sufferings 
were intense.  A more sickening sight is rarely seen.  While the sufferings of 
the little victim were terrible, she bore it with fortitude for several hours, 
when she told her mother good-by, and passed away.
