All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Chandler Eavenson http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00030.html#0007294 Deeds Thomas Fortson to William Gibbs Power of Attorney The following Power of Attorney is shown in Elbert Co., GA Deed Book G, page 136: "Georgia, Elbert County) To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting - Know ye that I Thomas Fortson of the County and State aforesaid hath constituted nominated and appointed, and by these presents doth constitute nominate and appoint William Gibbs of the State and County aforesaid my true and lawful Attorney for me and in my name to ask, demand and receive, from Benjamin Winn of the State of Virginia and County of Caroline two negroes (viz) Bachus and a boy whose name to me is unknown which said negroes are my distributive share of the estate of Elizabeth Johnson decd and decreed to me by a Decree of the Court of Chancery of said State of Virginia hereby releasing all errors, and ratifying whatever my said Attorney may act for me as fully and as completely as if I myself were personally present. Given under my hand and seal this 29th day of January 1802. Tho Fortson (seal) Test James Alston, JP Registered 29th Jany 1802" [Submitter's notes: The person who made this Power of Attorney was Rev. Soldier Lt. Thomas Fortson, Jr. (1742-1824). William Gibbs was Dr. William Hasell Gibbs, his son-in-law as William was married to his daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" Fortson. Elizabeth Johnson was Elizabeth Johnston, widow of Aquilla Johnston, who was the mother of Thomas Fortson, Jr., she having been previously married to Thomas Fortson, Sr. The wife of Thomas Fortson, Jr. was Rachel Winn, daughter of Benjamin Winn.
