Patterson to his Mother Mrs. Betty Ann Patterson ( page one ) Camp near Addams run May 1863 Dear Mother sisters and brothers it is with pleasure that I seat my self this evening to Drop you a few lines Which Will inform you that I am well. It is hard fur me to hafto say to you that I hird to day that Father was Dead Mother nothing never hirt me as bad be fore in my life but it was gods will fur him to dy I hope and trust that god is with him fur We all hafto dy and We all ought to be prepared to dy at anytime do not let this hirt your feelings any Worse that they are fur it is hard and We all had that debt to pay Some day Mother I Did not get nair letter from home but I got one from Anna Jane Patterson and Obediah Minton I am truly glad that they all right to me I cold hear from home as often from my friends as I Will cold from home it hirts me to think about him sending me Word to come home he Wanted to see me so bad and I cold not get to come and if I had a got to come maby I would a had to come back ( page two ) be fore he died and it would not a bin any satisfaction to me it is hard fur a feller to be bound up more that a nigger any Ways furlows is Stoped hear now but it is likely that they Will start them soon they are expect a fight on Johns island soon I think that is the reason they stoped furlowing I think Mother I think I cold a bin at home a long a go if my officer Would a tried Mother I am going to stay in this Company until I get a furlow and then I allow to get to the fort Where Van is right to me all a bout father and What he sed and let me no Where he Was buried at I hope he Was buried at hope Well I do not like that place Where the rest Was at Phillipses Thomas Patterson Wants to right some it is hard take it as well as you can so I must close so nothing more only I hope the rest of you is all well nothing more T D Patterson To Mrs Betty Ann Patterson ( Compliers note - This was a letter found in the personals effects of Mr.Darrell Rhodes, a great grandson of Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth (Sallie) Davis Harris, wife of Pope Daniel Harris.
