Submitted by his Great Great Grandson Chandler Eavenson 491 Whippoorwill Lane, Sautee-Nactoochee, GA 30571: On 23 August 1892 George Eavenson of Elbert Co., GA completed an Indian Wars Claim of Soldier for Service Pension Under the Act of July 27, 1892. In this claim he stated he was 75 years of age, a resident of Elbert Co., GA, that he served under the name of George Eavenson as a Private in the Company commanded by Capt. T. J. Bowman in the tenth Regiment of Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Stokes in the Cherokee Disturbance; that he enlisted at Elberton on or about the 20th day of April, 1838 for the term "during the war", and was honorably discharged at New Echota on the 23 day of June, 1838; tht at the time of entering the service claimed for he was 21 years of age, five feet four inches in height, blue eyes, dark brown hair, fair complexion, by occupation a farmer; that he was born in Elbert County, GA; that since leaving the service he has resided in Elbert Co. 54 years; that he was married to Sarah S. Thornton on the first day of August, 1839 at Elbert Co., that said wife Sarah S. having died on the 16th day of December, 1863 and he had since remarried and the maiden name of his present wife was Frances J. Hunt. The claim was witnessed by D. J. Maxwell, J.P. and was accompanied by an affidavit from Samuel E. McCurry, age 83, and James A. Clark stating they had served with the claimant and knew he did service in the Cherokee Disturbance. Accompanying the above claim was a form on which George Eavenson stated that his first wife's name was Sarah Smith Thornton and that he was now married to Frances Jane Hunt. He listed seven cf his first wife's children then living, i. e. John W., Willis J., Martha E. Smith, Amanda C. Maxwell, Priscilla J. Pledger, Laura V. Higginbotham and Sarah A. Bond; also children by his second wife, i. e. James A., Rueben E., Isham M., Emma E., Benjamin F. and Lela A. Eavenson, this form being dated 6 Feb. 1893. Also in the file was an affidavit dated 24 August 1898 from Frances J. Eavenson stating that her husband had died on in Elbert Co. on 16 July 1898, this affidavit being accompanied by another from John C. Brown, age 41, and M. E. Maxwell, age 35, in which they stated they had known Frances J. Eavenson for 30 years, that she was the wife of George Eavenson, etc. Further documents reflect that Frances J. Eavenson was receiving a pension until her death on 10 July 1918, the amount of her final check being in the amount of $36.00. [Submitter's notes: The full known name of the claimant was George W. Eavenson. He was born on 23 Feb 1817 in Elbert Co., the son of George Eavenson(1782-1842) and Mary Hilley (1781-1855). George W. Eavenson had 11 children by his first wife and 10 children by his 2nd wife. Some of his children had died prior to the filing of his claim for a pension.]
