The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net *********************************************************************** Pension Application No. W.4111, Service in Virginia *********************************************************************** State of Georgia ) Elbert County ) SS On this ninteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two, personally appeared in Open Court before William H Crawford, Judge of the Superior court of the Northern Circuit of said State now sitting for Elbert County Thomas Adams a resident in the County of Elbert and State of Georgia aged Seventy four years, Who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on his Oath, make the following declaration in Order to Obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he enlisted in the Army of the United States in the month of May or June in the year One thousand Seven hundred and Seventy Nine, with Captain William Courtley, and Served in the Regiment of the under the following named Officers: to Wit, Colonel Francis Taylor, Major John Roberts and Captain William Courtley, and left the Service in the Spring of the year One thousand Seven hundred and eighty one. That he resided in Albemarle County State of Virginia when he enlisted in the Service of the United States and Was appointed Sergeant, Joined his Regiment at a place Called Albemarle Barracks in the State of Virginia Where he was mostly stationed during his term of Service March from thence to Winchester State of Virginia as a Guard to prisoners and remained at that place until he was discharged from Service. (page 2) He hereby relinquishes every Claim Whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the Agency of any State. Warren a Justice of the peace in and for said County and after being Duly sworn Deposeth and saith that it comes immediately under his knowledge that Thomas Adams of said County served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War and that he went from the County of Albemarl in the state of Virginia. sworn to and subscribed before me this 19th day of september 1832. his James X Adams Jeremiah S. Warren before whom the foregoing affidavit of James Adams was made is an acting Justice of the Peace in & for said County, and that James Adams is a creditable Witness, and is said to be too old and infirm to Come to Court Given under my hand at office the 19th day of September 1832. Benajah Houston Clerk ******************************************************************* State of Georgia ) Elbert County ) On this twenty fourth day of February in the year Eighteen hundred and thirty nine, personally appeared before me William Jones One of the Justices of the Inferior Court in and for the County of Elbert and State of Georgia: Sally Adams, a resident of the County and State aforesaid Aged Seventy three years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress, passed July the 7th 1838, entitled "An Act granting half pay and pensions to Certain Widows" That she is the Widow of Thomas Adams who was a Sergeant in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War that he enlisted and served as a Sergeant in the Continental Army of the Revolution in the month of May in the year Seventeen hundred and Seventy nine, under Captain William Courtly, in one of the Virginia Regiments of Regulars Commanded by Colonel Francis Taylor and Major John Roberts, and that my deceased husband at the time of his enlistment resided in Albemarle County State of Virginia joined his Regiment at Albemarle Barracks; in the last aforesaid State, Marched from there to Winchester Where he remained as Guard over British prisoners taken at General Burgoin's Capture, until the Spring Seventeen hundred and eight one, then he was discharged having Served two years the term of his enlistment, for all which service he was placed on the pension Roll, and received a pension of one hundred and twenty dollars per Annum untill his death; She further declares that she was married to the said Thomas Adams on the fourth day of October in the year Seventeen hundred and eighty six; that her husband the aforesaid Thomas Adams died on the fourth day of (page 2) February in the year eighteen hundred and thirty six; that she was not married to him prior to his having the Service, but the marriage took place previous to the first of January Seventeen hundred and ninety four viz: at the time above stated. her Sworn to and Subscribe on ) Salley X Adams the day and year above written ) mark before William Jones, J.I.C. I William Jones, one of the Justices of the Inferior Court in and for Elbert County, State of Georgia, do hereby Certify that the applicant Salley Adams Widow of the aforesaid Thomas Adams, Cannot by reason of her bodily infirmity attend our said Court. Adams and Polley 1818 - named Elizabeth Adams, Named Elizabeth Georgia ) Elbert County ) Be it known that before me William Jones one of the Justices of the Inferior Court in and for the County of Elbert and State aforesaid personally appeared Nicholas M. Adams a resident of the same place, who after being duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath declare that the annexed family Register of Thomas Adams deceased under Whom Salley Adams Claims a pension is Original and has remained in his possession ever since the death of the said Thomas Adams until the present time, and that the said Register is in the hand writing of the said Thomas Adams deceased and he further declares that the above named Salley Adams is the Widow of the said Thomas Adams, and that she never afterwards married. Sworn to and Subscribed on the twenty fourth day of February in ) the Year Eighteen hundred & thirty ) Nicholas M. Adams Nine before me William Jones J.I.C. I William Jones, one of the Justices of the Inferior Court in and for Elbert Count, State of Georgia, do hereby Certify that Nicholas M.
