After attending High School in Elberton, he attended Young Harris College. In 1917 while living in Jamestown, ND he volunteered with the 23rd Engineers. After a time at Camp Meade in Co. F, he sailed on the George Washington on 28 Jan 1918 for Brest, France. Went to Neviere, then to Clermont, Argonne on detached service, then rejoined his Company during the Meuse-Argonne drive. Was in charge of the roads in the sector and after the armistice his command went from Chaumont to Langre and Dijon. He left Brest on the Plattsburg on 7 June 1919 and was discharged on 22 June 1919 at Camp Upton. He died in April, 1966 at Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon and is buried there.
