Military - World War I - George Barrett Conwell, Jr. 


George Barrett Conwell, Jr. was born on 24 July 1888 in Elbert Co., 
GA, the son of George Barrett Conwell, Sr. and Sally Vileta Hall. 
He attended school in Elbert and Wilkes Cos., GA and Young Harris 
College. He later took over his father's farming and business 
interests at Goss, Elbert Co., then in 1915 moved to Blasdell, NY.
He enlisted in the USMC on 16 Apr 1918 and after training he sailed
from New York on the USS Henderson for France. The USS Henderson 
had to be abandoned three days out because of fire but all were 
rescued by the USS Von Steuben. Landed at Brest, France, joined 
the 96th Co., 6th Regt. at Chavigny and until Aug 17 was engaged
in the Marbach Sector, in action at Pont-a-Mousson, Toul, St. Mihiel, 
Charmes la Cote, Mont Blanc and Meuse-Argonne, and after the 
armistice was assigned in Rheinbrohl, Germany. He had been lightly 
gassed during a previous action and in January 1919 he had a second
bout with influenza which turned into pneumonia, causing his death
on 3 Mar 1919 in the Evacuation Hospital at Coblenz. He body was 
later brought back to Elbert Co. where it was interred in the Hall-
Conwell cemetery at Goss. [Ref: See book "Elbert Countians in Our

Additional Information: His maternal grandparents were Lt. James 
Chambers Hall (1832-1862), CSA and Mary Adaline Loftis Hall (1832-
1885) of Goss, Elbert Co. His paternal grandparents were James 
Conwell and Sallie Dupree Mann.
