He moved to Atlanta in 1914 with his widowed mother and sisters Edna and Sallie Lou. He entered the U. S. Army on 27 April 1918 at Camp Gordon, GA, first saw service with the 157 Depot Brigade, then transferred to the 307 Ammunition Train, 82nd Division and served as an ammunition carrier in France and Germany. He was discharged at Camp Gordon, GA on 19 May 1919. He married in 1922 to Mary Bond, daughter of Mark Reeves Bond and Alice A.Mize. Fred and Mary had one daughter Bettie Fortson who was married to Major Leo Adamczyk, US Army. Fred had been employed by the Railway Express Agency in Atlanta for over 30 years when he died on 26 Apr 1948 in Atlanta.
