He attended Lighter-than-Air school at Lakehurst, NJ and flew in the USS Macon, USS Akron, USS Los Angeles and various non-rigid air ships in anti-submarine patrol duty during World War II in Europe, Asia, South Pacific, South America and the USA. He was a graduate of the Advanced Navigation School and Loran School, Charleston, SC. He retired from the US Navy in 1954. He served as President of the Fleet Reserve Association. BR51, in Miami, FL, and was a member of the US Naval Institute, Annapolis, MD. [Submitter's notes: He was a son of James Lester Vickery (1873-1919) and Mary Emma Fortson(1878-1954), daughter of Asa Chandler Fortson (CSA) and Louisa Catherine Hall. After retirement he pursued his interest in painting (portraits, landscapes), served as VP of Hollywood, FL Arts and Crafts, and served as Chairman of the Student Aid Fund, FL Federation of Art. He served as genealogist for the Miami, FL Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He married on 23 Jan 1931 in Kennedyville, MD to Dorothy Helen Bamber, daughter of Albert A. and Mae McKnight Bamber of Philadelphia. He died 2 Dec 1975 and his wife Dorothy died 1 Dec 2001, both buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bowman, Elbert Co., GA beside his parents and grandparents Rev. Willam J.
