The meeting was called especially to elect new teachers and go over the work of the school for the past year. Chairman W. M. Coile, of Winterville, presided, and when the roll was called the following members of the board were found to be present; Dr. B. D. Ragsdale, Macon; W. M. Coile, Wintervile; W. A. Hogan, Linclon county; T. M. Galphin, Hartwell; H. J. Brewer, Elberton; L. F. Edwards, Athens; L. W. Collier, Comer, and L. W. Hendricks, Bowman. The Teachers elected were: W. C. Underwood, of Richland, Ga., principal, and G. C. Tharp, of Tifton, Ga., assistant principal. Among other things brought up at the meeting was the name of the school. Ever since the building of the school house it has borne the name of John Gibson Institute, but as it has recently gone under the management of Mercer University, and is , in other words, simply a preparatory school for this university, a change in name was thought to be appropriate and necessary. After due deliberation it was decided to name the school " The Gibson-Mercer Academy," a name that will connect the school with its founder and also show that it is an offspring of Mercer. The board realized that the building and grounds needed repairs, and raised the neat sum of $415, which will be expended during the summer vacation in putting the school property in good condition for the fall term.
