Obituary - Sally Conwell Dean - 4 Nov 1969 


The following obituary appeared in the Elberton Star newspaper
in Nov 1969: 


"Princeton, NJ - Mrs. Sally Conwell Dean, 88, wife of the late 
Robert J. Dean, died Nov 4, 1969 in a Princeton hospital. She was 
born and reared in Elbert Co., GA, the eldest daughter of the late 
George Barrett and Sally Hall Conwell. She was educated in Georgia 
schools and colleges. After finishing she went into newspaper work
at an early age, reporting on dailies and editing and managing class 
magazines in Atlanta, New Orleans, Buffalo and New York. In 1926 she
and Mr. Dean retired to a farm in southern Dutchess [County, NY] 
where they lived until 1946 when they moved to Hughsonville. Mrs. 
Dean is survived by a sister, Mrs. Chessye Conwell Rowan of 
Lawrenceville, NJ and one niece." 


[Additional information: Sally Conwell was born 7 Nov 1880 at 
Goss, Elbert Co. She married Robert Jerome Dean, art director of 
the old Uncle Remus magazine, he later a cartoonist for New Orleans
and Buffalo newspapers, a syndicated writer and artist of the old 
New York Herald, and  executive editor and publisher of the old
Morning Telegraph of NYC.]
