Born in Elbert County, he was a son of the late James Edward and Elizabeth Fortson Herndon. He was twice married, first to the late Mathilde Smith Herndon. He was a graduate of Mercer University, a charter member and past president of Elberton Rotary Club, Elberton Elks Lodge, Elberton Chamber of Commerce and Elberton Country Club, founder of Elberton Federal Savings and Loan, where he served as president and chairman of the board for 46 years, founder of Herndon and Smith General Contractors, chairman of the business committee for construction of the Elberton-Elbert County Hospital, a member of First Baptist Church of Elberton and a Sunday School teacher. Surviving are daughter Mrs. [name omitted] of Greenville, eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m.today at the family plot in Elmhurst Cemetery by Dr. Al Meredith. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Fred Herndon Rotary Scholarship Fund or to the charity of one's choice. Additional Comments: Fred Herndon was born on 16 Sep 1890, the son of James Edward Herndon (1850- 1906) and Mary Elizabeth Fortson (1854-1935). He married first on 23 Apr 1913 to Mathilde Smith (1892-1919) and second on 15 May 1922 to Mary Helen Smith (1897-1968),sister of his first wife.
