Hewell, Jr., 26 Aug 1988 The following obituary appeared in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution on 26 Aug 1988: "Mr. Lester D. Hewell, Jr., Was Southeastern VP of F. W. Woolworth Co. "Mr. Lester D. Hewell, Jr. of Dunwoody, retired Southeast vice president for F. W. Woolworth Co., died of cancer Wednesday [24 Aug] at Piedmont Hospital. He was 67. "The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Wieuca Road Baptist Church with burial at Arlington Memorial Park. "Lester David Hewell, Jr. was born May 5, 1921 in Elberton GA. As a youngster, he delivered The Atlanta Journal there. "He began is career with Woolworth as a stockman in Elberton in 1939. During World War II, he served in the U.S.Army from 1942 to 1945 in North Africa, France and Germany. "After the war, he resumed his work with Woolworth as a store manager, then as district manager in Miami, Birmingham and Jacksonville. He lived in Atlanta from 1963 to 1977 and was a Woolworth store opener, regional sales manager and assistant to the regional vice president before being assigned to California as regional vice president. "Mr. Hewell was corporate vice president for expenses and security in the New York executive office, and he was Southeastern regional vice president before retiring in 1986. "He was a deacon of Wieuca Road Baptist Church." [Submitter's notes: He was a son of Lester David Hewell, Sr. (1886- 1959) and Jessie Adeline Fortson (1891-1969). He was married to Gurvis Johnson of Elbert Co. During combat duty in World War II he was awarded the Bronze Star and Good Conduct medals, with seven battle stars.
