The last of these who passed to the world beyond Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 o'clock was Mr. W. M. Thornton. His death was not unexpected by his family, as he has been in feeble health for several months. Wednesday morning, however, he seems to be improving, and set on his front porch chatting pleasantly with his family, and at the supper table he seemed cheerful, when he was stricken down and fell from his chair. He was given every attention to restore him, but he rapidly sank until the end came. Mr. Thornton was one of Elberton's best citizens, and held the confidence and esteem of all our people, having served in the capacity of treasurer for four years, during which time he made a good and efficient officer. When the civil war broke out he was among the first to go to the front from Elbert county, where he stayed for four years, battling for the cause he thought right and just. In 1876 he was united in marrige to Miss Lucinda Jones. Their home was blessed with seven children, six of whom survive him: Dozier, Thomas, Julia, Daisy, Emma and William Thornton. Mr. Thornton joined the Baptist Church at Doves Creek when a boy, but afterwards trnsferred his membership to Elberton, and was up to the time of his death a steadfast believer in that faith. For several weeks before his death he talked to his devoted wife about the hereafter. He realized his condition and was ready to go. The interment took place at the cemetery Friday afternoon. Rev. H. W. Williams officiating. Additional Comments: William Marion Thornton was born on 6 Jun 1842 and died on 2 Aug 1900. On 12 Dec 1876 he married Sarah Lucinda Jones, born 20 Sep 1850, died 15 Dec 1921. He was the son of Dozier Thornton (1817-1874), the youngest child of Benjamin Thornton, Sr., and Jane M. Fortson (1819-1889), daughter of Jesse Fortson and Mary Ballinger White.
