CAL THORNTON DEAD - Two brothers died within a short time of each other. Mr. J. Cal Thornton, about 65 years old, died at his home near Doves Creek Thursday morning about 10 oclock. He had been in a bad state of health for a long time, but had been confined to his bed only a few days before his death. The burial occurred today at 11 oclock at the family burial grounds near his home. The funeral was conducted at his home at 10 oclock. Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife who is in a very low state of health, and the following children: Mesdames I. J. Goolsby and L. M. Fortson, Miss Janie Thornton, James D., Frank D., Albert L. and Charley Thornton. The deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist church and one of Elbert's well known farmers. He has a large family connection in the county. He is the second son of the late Dozier Thornton to die in Elbert within the past few weeks, his youngest brother, Jos. D. Thornton having died a short time since. Additional Comments: John Calvin Thornton, born 11 Nov 1845, died 4 Jul 1912, Confederate soldier, married on 24 May 1864 to Amanda Eugenia Almond, born 7 Jan 1849, died 6 Sep 1912. Their children were Ida, Janie, Frances Tallulah, James Dozier, Frank Bolton, Albert and Charles G. Thornton. John Calvin Thornton was the son of Dozier Thornton (1817-1874), youngest child of Benjamin Thornton, Sr., and Jane M. Fortson (1819-1889), daughter of Jesse Fortson and Mary Ballinger White.
