Thornton Sleeps at Falling Creek Cemetery - Died at Daughter's Home Saturday. Mr. Isham H. Thornton, age 78, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Chandler Stevens at Shady Cross, Oglethorpe county, Saturday morning at 10 oclock. He had been in declining health for several months. Mr. Thornton was the last of eight sons of the late Dozier Thornton. He was a good citizen, a successful farmer and business man, a leading and long time member of Falling Creek Baptist church and a resident of Elbert county up to a few years ago when his health failed him. He is survived by his widow, a daughter of the late Thos. J. Herndon, and the following children: Mrs. Chandler Stevens and Mrs. H. C. Whitehead, Oglethorpe county, Mrs. Joe Lunsford, Wilkes county; Messrs. H. G. and D. J. Thornton of Elbert county, and H. E. Thornton of Gainesville, and eleven grandchildren. The funeral services were conducted at Falling Creek in the presence of one of the largest gatherings ever seen at a funeral at this church Sunday afternoon, 2 oclock by Rev. Henry T. Brookshire, assisted by Revs. J. H. Mashburn and A. W. Bussey, all of whom paid high tribute to the life of the deceased. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful and numerous, attesting the love and esteem in which he was held. A quartette composed of Willie Thornton, H. G. Mewbourn, Miss Edna Rogers and Mrs. W. E. Fortson sang sweetly old familiar songs that were favorites of the deceased. Additional Comments: Isham Hamilton Thornton was born 24 Sep 1851, died 8 Mar 1930, the son of Dozier Thornton (youngest child of Benjamin Thornton, Sr.) and Jane M. Fortson (daughter of Jesse Fortson and Mary B. White). He married on 12 Dec 1877 in Elbert Co. to Mary Louise "Lou" Herndon, born 8 Dec 1858, died 10 Dec 1939. Their children were Lester Denmead, Elma Louise, Harold Gibson, Daniel Jefferson, Howard Eugene and Ione Elizabeth Thornton.
