Elbert Co. marriage records show Archibald Payton and Matilda Therlkeld were 
married on 13 Jan 1849. Although the death certificate gives the husband of the 
deceased as Dentist Stephens, there is an Elbert Co. marriage record for a 
Dennis Stephens and Mahulda Payton on 16 Feb 1867. An Elbert Co. cemetery book 
indicates there is a Payton cemetery in Elbert Co.
