DURRENCE - (White) pg 28 Fort Stewart Cemetery Number 50, located in Ft. Stewart Area F-9. Land Acquisition Tract Number: 158A. Acreage: .09. Former Property Owner: H. J. Durrence Cemetery. Map Grid Coordinates -Vertical: 50.0? Horizontal: 24.1?. North on GA-119 toward Pembroke to GA-129 (dirt road). Left on GA-129 to FS-13 (at Camp Oliver, near Glisson’s Pond). Right on FS-13 to Remagen DZ (Drop Zone) on right. Cemetery is near southwest corner of Remagen DZ. Unable to locate cemetery for survey. The site of this cemetery was later located and marked by Fort Stewart officials. The following list of burials in H. J. Durrence Cemetery was provided by Mrs. Mary Frances Oliver. A note at the top of the list states, “Behind Grandmother Macy Ann Rogers Durrence’s home, now in Fort Stewart Reservation.” ***Permission MUST BE requested at Range Control. They will outline a route based on road conditions and training in the area. *** 1 Durrence, William, Jr., 1780 (N.C.) - 1850-60. (Husband of #2.) 2 Durrence, Cynthia Tippins, 1787-After 1860, Daughter of Phillip Tippins. R.S. - N.C. (Wife of #1.) 3 Durrence, William. III, 1804-March 8, 1841, Son of William, Jr.. married Margaret Ann Burkhalter. 4 Durrence, John Underwood, 1813-May 6, 1867, Son of Wm. Jr., married Josephine Purcell. She married (2) Seabom Jones. 5 Smith, Sarah Matilda Durrence, Daughter of Wm., Jr., ca. 1803-1860-70. (Wife of #6.) 6 Smith, Joseph W. - Drowned in Canoochee. Born,? - Coroner’s Jury found for Death by Drowning, Feb 8, 1850. (Husband of # 5.) ========== NOTES: Bill Fish wfish@isoa.net Note the William Durrance III listed and listed as his wife is Margaret Burkholder, true Margaret Burkholder was married to a William Durrance (1823-1861) and shown in the 1850 Tattnall census, but as the dates in the interview indicate the William buried here died in 1841. I also have a copy of the original "synopsis of Taped interview with Informants" and it lists three generations of William Durrance, the senor Welcom William Durrance, md Elizabeth Williams, William Junior md Cynthia Tippins, and William James Durrance (William III) md Luraney DeLoach. At the time of this interview 1992, George T Durrance (age 86), states based on his personal family history research and the recollections of older family members that certain members of the family are buried there but no names or dates existed on any of the wooden markers. He goes on to state who the thinks are in the burial population interred in the cemetery. Cynthia Tiffens Durrence born 1887 (?) died after 1860 (?) Joseph Underwood Durrence born 1813 died 5/ 6/ 1867 Josephine Purcell Born 1836 died (?) William W Durrence III born 1804 died 3/8/1841 Laurania DeLoad (?) born 1807 died after 1875 Sarah Matilda Durrence born 1803 died between 1860 and 1870 Joseph Smith drowned 2/8/185? Mrs. Smith (daughter of William Durrence) dates unknown. And it is very easy to see the changes between the two.
