Chastain Drowned. On Thursday evening, 9th instant, Hon. E.W. Chastain, of Gilmer county, in company with Mr. Dickey, Mr. Travis and another gentleman, left Dalton where the party had been in attendance at court. They reached Holley Creek, some six miles from Dalton, which they found considerably swollen. Col. Chastain, in attempting to ford the creek, was thrown from his horse, and drowned, before assistance could reach him. Col. Chastain was well known. For many years he has held honorable positions at the hands of the people of North Georgia. For several years he was State Senator, and twice he has represented his district in the National Congress. Additional Comments: Elijah Webb Chastain was born in Pickens County, South Carolina, on September 25, 1813, and died on April 9, 1874. He was a colonel in the Seminole Indian War. He was admitted to the bar in 1849 and practiced in Blairsville, Union County, Georgia. He served two terms in the state house of representatives and one term in the state senate. He was elected as a Union Democrat to the 32nd and 33rd Congresses (1851-1855). He was the State's attorney for the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1860 and 1861. He participated in the Civil War as a colonel of Confederate troops. He is interred in the family cemetery near Morganton, Fannin County, Georgia.
