He came here from Hayesville, N.C., about twenty or more years ago and had the respect of the good white people who knew him as well as his own race. Additional Comments: (Jackson “Jack” Russell was born in January of 1837 on the George Dickey plantation in Cherokee County, North Carolina. In 1842 he was purchased by John Russell, son in law of George Dickey, for $304.00. He work on the John Russell plantation in Union (later Towns) County until about 1870 when he married Priscilla Padgett. They lived in Clay County, North Carolina, until about 1909 when they moved to Blue Ridge. He died on June 10, 1929, and is buried in the Padgett’s Chapel Cemetery.)
