About two o'clock Tuesday morning the construction train, at work on upper end of the M. & N. Ga. R. R., about Toccoa river, was running backwards with two or three flat cars ahead of it, loaded with crossties, when the front car struck a cow on the track. Too (sic) men, Tom Killian, of Gilmer, and J. Rutledge of Fannin, were sitting on some ties at the front end of the car, and were thrown off on the track, and the cars passed over them and killed them almost instantly. The train was running very slowly, and stopped within forty feet of where the accident occurred. No blame is attached to the engineer, Will Garwood, nor any one else connected with the running of the train, but it is taken to be an accident unavoidable and liable to occur at any time under similar circumstances. The men, perhaps, acted very imprudently in sitting where they did. Both men had families, and the accident is greatly regretted. The authorities did all they could to alleviate the suffering, and provided for the burial of the dead.
