Mr. Thornton, a justice of the peace for 30 years, had been a member of the Board of Education 20 years. Under his leadership, the public schools of Fayette County made outstanding progress. Surviving are his wife; one son, C. B. Thornton, of Atlanta; one granddaughter, Marjorie Lisa Thornton; three sisters, Mrs. J. R. Orr, Mrs. J. A. Babb and Mrs. F. W. McKlenny [sic], all of Fayetteville
