Shaw Resident of Rome This is a list of miscellaneous gravesites located at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome, Floyd County, Georgia. Myrtle Hill is one of the Seven Hills of Rome Georgia. It is located at the south end of Broad Street in downtown Rome. The cemetery is surrounded by South Broad Street, Branham Avenue, Pennington Avenue, and Myrtle Street. Myrtle Hill Cemetery is picturesque with impressive monuments, memorials and grave markers. It sits at the confluence of the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers where the Coosa River is formed. Some points are particular interests on Myrtle Hill Cemetery are: * Ellen Louise Axson grave site. B. May 15, 1860 in Savannah, Georgia. D. August 6, 1914 in the White House, Washington D.C. She was the first wife of Thomas Woodrow Wilson who later became President of the United States. They married on June 23, 1885. They had three daughters. Ellen Axson resided in Rome, Georgia prior to her marriage. She graduated from Rome Female College. Her father was The Reverend Samuel Axson who was the minister of Rome's First Presbyterian Church. She studied art at The Art Students League in New York. Among other places, her artwork was exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute, Women Arts in New York. She established a scholarship at Berry Schools in memory of her brother and sold many of her paintings to fund it. She was also known for helping Woodrow Wilson with his political career. Ellen Axson Wilson was responsible for the creation of the Rose Garden at the White House. One of her missions was to improve the working conditions of the working poor in Washington D.C. It is believed that she contracted tuberculosis of the kidneys in the slums of Washington. She had to have minor surgery on her legs after falling on a highly polished floor in the White House. After this she seemed to start suffering from numerous health problems. She was eventually diagnosed with Bright's Disease. On August 6, 1914, she died in the White House, at the age of fifty-four. Mrs. Ellen Axson Wilson was brought back to Rome Georgia to be buried at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. *Grave of Major Zachariah Branscomb Hargrove, one of the founders of Rome. *Grave of Colonel Daniel R.
