The Rome Petroleum and Iron Company is seeking to secure an option on the land. This property belongs to Mr. Sam Braham, Mr. John Graham and Mr. H. D. Cothran. This clay is reputed to be very valuable, being worth in the crude state, $25.00 per ton. It is found in limited quantities in very few regions and most of it is imported from Europe. Parties alleged that a large quantity has been dug from the ground at Lavender, and six feet of excavation has been made without diminishing the supply. It will prove a big enterprise for Floyd county if the present prospect holds good. It is thought a number of Chicago capitalists are interested in the fire clay mining, and it is certain that a number of moneyed men from Chicago have arrived in Rome and visited the grounds where the clay is being dug.
