Rome, GA., Dec. 21.-- But for the timely arrival of officers, Grover Porter, a negro, would have been lynched here today. He attempted to assault two white women while they were engaged in milking cows. The news spread quickly and about 9 o'clock a crowd surrounded his hut. The police then came upon the scene, captured Porter, and took him to jail. The excitement has died down since then, and there is no fear of further trouble.
