Atkins, 72, 809 South Broad St., died Friday night at a local hospital. A native of Morgan County, Alabama. Mr. Atkins was born August 7, 1920, the son of Joel C. Atkins and Bessie Mae Dobbs Atkins. Mr. Atkins was retired from the U.S. Army, and was a member of the American Legion Shanklin-Attaway Post No. 5, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include: five sons - Carl Atkins, Carrollton, Texas, Clarence E. Atkins, Jr., [sic] Ozaw [sic], Kansas, David Atkins, Leavenworth, Leav. County, Kansas, Paul Atkins, Blue Springs, Missouri [sic] and Bruce Atkins, El-Reno, Oklahoma [sic]; 3 brothers - J. C. Atkins, Palmetto, Florida, Glenn Atkins, Rome and Herman Atkins, Rome; 4 sisters - Blanche McCray, Melbourne, Florida, Pauline Evans, Huntsville, Alabama, Mildred Stone, Rome and Christine Brock, Rome; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 11 A.M. at the chapel of Daniel's Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyt Coker officiating. Interment will be in the Cross Roads Cemetery, Taylorsville. The family will receive friends at Daniel's Funeral Home on Wednesday morning from 10AM until the service hour. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to a favorite charity.
