Burnes, 87, pioneer citizen of Rome, died at the residence, 102 East 10th Street at 1:05 p.m. today following an extended illness. Born February 25, 1861, the son of the late John and Mary Davis Burnes, he had spent his entire life in Floyd County. He was a charter member of the Sand Springs Baptist Church, and at the time of his death, was the oldest living member of the Maple Street Baptist Church. Surviving are four sons, John M. and W. C. Burnes, of Rome; L. R. Burnes of Atlanta and S. H. Burnes, of Gainsville; three daughters, Mrs. Leila Green, of Rome; Mrs. R. S. Thomas of Summerville, and Mrs. M. O. Green, of Atlanta. Twenty six grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren also survive him. The funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Jennings Funeral Home. (Note: The notice in the next day's paper said the burial would be at Sand Springs Cemetery, with the funeral being held at 3 p.m. at the Maple Street Baptist Church. Pallbearers were A. L. Floyd, R. L. Cordle, Clifton Hicks, G. W. Boggs, Ben O. Morris and M. E. Horton.)
