Dowdy of Summerville Dies During Visit John William Dowdy, 67 of Summerville Route 3, died unexpectedly at 3 p.m. Tuesday while visiting at the residence of his son, J. W. Dowdy, Jr. on the Cunningham Road, Rome Route 3. Mr. Dowdy was born in Cleaborn, Ala. Nov. 26, 1887, son of the late Robert and Harriett Sullivan Dowdy. He had spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County, having moved to Summerville three years ago. Mr. Dowdy was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church. Surviving are the widow, the former Ethel Rice, to whom he was married Oct. 3, 1909, four sons, J. W. Dowdy, Jr. and William Raymond Dowdy of Rome, Route 3, Robert S. Dowdy, of Rome and J. R. Dowdy of Summerville, five daughters, Mrs. E. E. Mills and Mrs. E. G. Wilson, both of Rome, Mrs. R.H. Storey, of Cartersville, and Mrs. J. B. Milligan and Mrs. J. W. Wilson, both of Summerville; the step-mother, Mrs. Willie Dowdy of Americus; one brother, J. A. Dowdy, of Rome; four half-brothers, Jeff, Zeke, Earl and Willis Dowdy, all of Americus, and two half sisters, Mrs. Nonia Cheak and Mrs. Etta Cummings, both of Americus. Twenty-four grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted from the West Summerville Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Robert Akin, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Johnny Bing will officiate with interment in Beech Creek Cemetery, Rome. The body will lie in state at the residence of the son, J. R. Dowdy, 104 Kelley Street, Summerville until time for the services. Pallbearers will be Paul Broome, Russell Powell, Tom Cole, J. T. Lambert, L.F. Bing and F. A. Potts. (Note: Died Dec. 21, 1954)
