NOTES: From "All Roads to Rome" by Roger Aycock and our local "Floyd County Heritage" book, I discovered that this John W. Noble was the son of James Noble, Sr. , who along with his six sons, came to Rome in 1855 and built the famed "Noble Brothers Foundry". James Noble was acquainted with Jefferson Davis, who was at that time the United States Secretary of War. This foundry was one of the first in the South to receive a contract for military weaponry and during the War Between The States manufactured the "12 pound howitzer", the Confederate army's most popular piece. Sherman burned the foundry and the ruins of some of the machines are on display at the Rome Civic Center. The most enduring monument to the family is the famed "Rome Clock Tower", built by the foundry as a water reservoir in 1871. )
